Diamonds and Fine Jewellery

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

Precious Metals:

Precious metal is one of the earth’s precious commodities and the extraction of it can be harmful to the environment. Where possible we use recycled metals. Waste metal is kept and either reused in future projects or is passed to metal extraction companies so that it can be re-cycled.

Precious gem stones:

We believe in authenticity and transparency. Our Diamonds are Kimberly Process certified, while our gemstones are handpicked from trusted and reputable sources. This means we can trace nearly every stone to a country of origin, and sometimes even the specific mine. We also offer a service to our customers to repurpose precious gemstones within our bespoke offering.

Timber:

We only use timber for presentation boxes from one supplier which is all FSC ® (C112817) & PEFC Certified.

Chemical and acids:

The use of acids are an essential part of the enamelling and jewellery making processes. All acids are kept securely in an acid cupboard and great care is taken to ensure safe practise and that acids are kept away from entering the water system. All acids are kept securely until they can be disposed of through a chemical disposal company.

OUR PEOPLE

The staff at Fiona Rae are the most important part of our business. So much of our reputation has been built on their skills and enthusiasm for the job. As a small team, it is critical that we are respectful and supportive to each other. We strive to pay all of our staff a fair and decent living wage, and have always operated a generous bonus system, meaning a share for everyone in the company’s profits. On top of that we try to involve everybody in important decisions regarding the future of the business.

All staff have regular breaks, access to free refreshments and a place to relax on breaks, full holiday entitlements, and we are an equal opportunities employer. We have a zero tolerance of discrimination or harassment of any kind for all our staff. The responsibility of ensuring a safe and healthy environment to work for all staff is understood. We know the dangers involved in working with some of our equipment and materials, and everybody is well trained, with great focus on safe working practise. We constantly review and adapt to improve machines and techniques, and have had no accidents to date.

All staff are trained to understand the potential for targeted theft and understand the procedures should anything untoward happen during shop open hours. All staff carry personal alarms during office hours which have a direct link to a security monitoring company as well as smoke cloak deterrent to protect staff.

OUR COMMUNITY

We have strong ties to our local community and our proud to continue a strong tradition of manufacturing in this area. We are pleased to be in a position to help keep heritage craft skills and knowledge alive in the UK and provide opportunities for young people. Fiona has welcomed school pupils in the studio for work experience within a design and craft business. She has given talks at a local to encourage school pupils to consider a career in the arts and crafts as a viable career option.

CHARITY

Fiona has been involved with QEST QEST is a charity dedicated to supporting excellence in British craftsmanship since 2006 first as a trustee and since 2017 has remained connected to the charity by being a skills advisor for the selection of scholarships.

In response to the atrocity of the war in Ukraine, Fiona designed a pendant and cufflinks called the Sunflower of Peace, inspired by the national flower of Ukraine and enamelled it in yellow and blue which are the colours of Ukraine. This raised in excess of £7000 for the Disaster and Emergency Committee charity.

HERITAGE SKILLS

Fiona has been extremely fortunate to have learnt her craft skills from world class enamellers over the years and sees the responsibility of passing these skills on to the next generation. She has trained several interns enamelling within her studio and has lectured on the BA Jewellery degree at Central St Martins as well as visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and Belfast University.

She currently has one apprentice enameller.
